In California, Christmas is obviously still in winter since we’re in the northern hemisphere. However, our winters are super mild so it’s not like we get snow or anything so what some people might do a snow day up in the mountains or something (Big Bear is a super popular destination here in the south of the state). Fake snow is totally a thing too though it’s not as common as it seems to be in Australia 😅and it’s still cold enough to wear stuff like beanies and boots and scarves.

Every episode of 'The Simpsons' is a laugh at American culture. Even the fact that the accents are so bad is a laugh at American culture because American TV and filmmakers have a reputation for getting such things completely wrong out of apathy.

sure there's a difference. and there's a difference between american english and canadian english. yeah, right.

I've noticed this also with Northern Irish, but it occurs among Australians whenever there is a final O and also with OW as in the word "how." As diphthongs, they terminate with a sound about halfway between a "true" oo (as in American English) and a German u-umlaut (or a French u). Has this subtlety ever been pointed out?

I’ve only listened to 52 seconds of this so far and I would have to say Candice that you don’t have a typical Australian accent. You sound like you’re more educated or from a different area. And that’s why people think that you have a little bit of a Kiwi twang in your accent.

I was born in Sydney, and after 31 years there I moved to Adelaide where I have lived for 37 years. Early on I was picked up on my pronunciation of 'school' and 'pool' as a dead giveaway that I was from Sydney. But I never was picked up on my pronunciation of 'no'. I wonder if I still have the Sydney 'no'. Intriguing.

It’s true, Australia really was a Penal colony for the British Empire.

I was surprise how different the short a, e, and i were between the two. When compared to American English, we Yanks agree with the Aussies on the short a and e, but we go the way of the Kiwis with the short i.

Fosters was popular before it got sold.. not a major brand, but up there! When it went overseas it basically died in the ass... oh, another Aussie phrase! Died in the ass.. 😅

Sorry, I forgot to say, it was so lovely to hear some actual phrases that we Aussies use! Usually, you get the silly g'day, fair dinkum, servo stuff.. this is all stuff I say, and honestly, some I didn't realise were Aussie specific! Thankyou! ❤😊
